1. The Tragedy of Preventable Death

Omari was just five years old when it happened. She never felt a thing. During the night a female anopheles mosquito came through an open window and drew blood, leaving behind a deadly parasite. 1 About ten days later, Omari complained of a fever and headache. Inside her tiny body, the parasite multiplied, invaded her red blood cells, and caused them to stick to the walls of her blood vessels. Blood flow to her brain was choked off. Omari fell into a coma and never recovered.

In 2015, an estimated 438,000 people like Omari died from the mosquito-borne disease called malaria, and nearly half the world’s population is at risk. 2 Sadly, there is less hope of a solution now than fifty years ago. The approach once used to eradicate malaria has ground to a virtual halt through alarmist rhetoric and bureaucratic mismanagement. And it all started with a book. Here’s the story.
